Iolite

Iolite has it's name from the greek word "ios", meaning violet. These violet and blue tones also define the gem.

It's vitreous luster, allows for a beautiful shine through the gem. Where you can clearly see the different facets of blue, violet and slightly yellow when beholding it on different angles.

The gem is rarely treated, only showing it's natural beauty through a rigourous cutting and polishing process. Most blue gems, from topaz, to fine sapphire, receive routine treatment of one type or another.

Iolite has a moderate hardness but also a distinct cleavage in one direction which causes it to be more vulnerable to breakage when exposed to rough daily wear.

Iolite deposits are usually found in the gem gravels of Sri Lanka, several areas of Africa, India, Brazil, Madagascar, and Norway.
